Finnish YKI writing

How many words should you write?

Yki gives no official word count, so here is what common Yki prep guidance recommends for each writing task. ABCitizen shows the same recommendation while you write.

Level 3 of the intermediate test is B1 (enough for citizenship), level 4 is B2. Covering every point the task asks for matters more than the exact length.

Questions

Citizenship language exams, answered

Which citizenship language exams does ABCitizen cover?

Right now ABCitizen prepares you for Finland’s YKI test (Finnish, grade 3 / B1 for citizenship). Next on our roadmap are German (DTZ, telc Deutsch B1, Goethe-Zertifikat B1), Italian (CILS, CELI, PLIDA, CERT.IT), French (TCF IRN, TEF IRN) and Swedish.

What is the YKI exam?

YKI (Yleinen kielitutkinto) is Finland’s National Certificate of Language Proficiency. The Finnish YKI exam is one of the accepted ways to prove the language skills required for Finnish citizenship, and is also used for jobs, studies and other permits.

How can I prepare for the YKI exam online?

ABCitizen is a YKI exam prep course covering all four tested skills (speaking, writing, reading and listening), with instant AI feedback on every attempt, so you can practice online at your own pace, every day.

Does passing YKI help with Finnish citizenship?

Yes. YKI B1 is one of the ways to prove the Finnish or Swedish language skills required when applying for Finnish citizenship.

Is there a free way to try ABCitizen?

Yes. You can start with a free week: try everything, and cancel before the week ends to pay nothing. You can also sign up for free and practise existing content with AI feedback.

Is there a new Finnish citizenship test in 2027?

Yes. For citizenship applications submitted from 1 March 2027, applicants aged 18–64 must also show knowledge of Finnish society, for example with the new citizenship test (kansalaisuuskoe) in Finnish or Swedish. It does not replace the language requirement, so YKI still matters. See our guide at abcitizen.com/guides.

What languages does ABCitizen explain corrections in?

Explanations and corrections are available in over 50 languages, so you can practise the exam language while reading feedback in your own.
